Pens for the Troops : Crafting Pens with Purpose

For nearly two decades, Bruce Sanders has dedicated himself to a unique and heartfelt mission—creating handcrafted pens for service members. His journey began many years ago at the Ipswich Woodcrafts Club, where he was first introduced to pen turning. From the moment he shaped his first pen, he was hooked. What started as a personal passion soon evolved into something much greater.

With 12 years of service in the Australian Navy Reserve and a career as an Engineer Officer in both the Australian and British Merchant Navy, Bruce understands the sacrifices made by those in uniform. Wanting to give back in a meaningful way, he began crafting and sending pens exclusively for ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. That was 18 years ago, and his dedication has only grown stronger.

This ANZAC Day, over 700 pens will be distributed to HQ Middle East, South Sudan, 37 Squadron, 28 Squadron, and the entire crew of HMAS Adelaide, ensuring that every member of its tri-service team receives one. These pens are more than polished timber and carefully turned craftsmanship; they are a piece of Australia and symbol of respect, remembrance, and appreciation. Each pen carries with it the message that those who serve are never forgotten.

Through his work, Bruce has forged a deep connection with the men and women of the Australian Defence Force. His pens serve as a small but powerful reminder that their dedication is seen and valued.

About Pens for the Troops

Pens for The Troops is a community-based project that honours and supports Australian troops serving overseas. Run by the pen-turning section of the Ubeaut Woodwork Forum, the initiative accepts pens and donations from anyone who wants to show their appreciation. Covering the Navy, Army, and Air Force, the pens are distributed to service members through the Padres in the armed forces.

The History of Pens for the Troops

The idea for Pens for the Troops was sparked on April 24, 2008, when a passionate woodturner named Toni posted a heartfelt message on the Woodwork Forums. She shared her desire to support Australian troops with handcrafted pens and invited others to join her. The response was immediate and overwhelming. Within just two days, the project had gained significant traction, with woodturners across Australia eager to contribute.

By April 27, 2008, Toni handed over the responsibility of receiving and sending the pens to Amos, known as Wooden Ink on the forum. As donations poured in, pens were shipped to Australian service members stationed around the world. In August 2011, Amos passed the responsibility to Sam (Simomatra), who orchestrated the largest-ever shipment—sending over 580 pens for Christmas 2011.

A special Vietnam Veterans collection was later launched, supported by the Outer Eastern Melbourne Vietnam Veterans, who generously donated 200 pen kits for the 2011 Christmas appeal. Over the years, many letters of appreciation have been received from troops who have cherished these pens as symbols of gratitude and connection.
