Making Your Own BeadLOCK Tenon Stock

If you want the freedom to make your own BeadLock tenon stock in any species, whenever you want. You can purchase the necessary router cutters from Carbatec. The tungsten carbide cutters come in 3/8” and 1/2” with a 1/2” shank.

To make the tenon stock you will need to prepare some dressed tenon material. For the 3/8 (9.5mm) tenons your timber needs to measure 9.5mm x 35mm. To make the 1/2” (12.7mm) tenons, dress your timber to 12.7mm x 32mm. I like to keep the length to about 300 - 400mm to keep it manageable.

It’s simple enough to run the stock, but be aware of safety. You are cutting a fair bit of surface area so be vigilant and make sure your cutter is well guarded. A finger board will keep your material evenly against the fence and a piece of timber clamped to the fence and positioned over the cutter, will hold it down on the table surface and act as a guard. This board should be notched to create clearance for the cutter.

When setting the height of the router bit, make sure it sits in the centre of your timber. Set the fence so the rounded part of the cutter is just in contact with the timber. Have a sample mortise on hand so you can test the fit of the stock as you cut it.

To ensure the beads are symmetrical mark an edge and make sure that it is always facing up. If the Tenon stock is too loose or tight you need to adjust the fence in or out accordingly. Remember to halve the error because you are cutting both sides.
