This is a high quality and beautiful selection of traditional style Japanese chisels that would be a welcome addition to any woodworkers tool kit! The laminated YASUKI (SIROGAMI) steel is hardened to 64 (+/- 1) HRC, providing a hard face that holds well in use and can be honed to a razor sharp edge, with a softer backing for impact resistance and ease of sharpening.
Handles are turned from Japanese red oak with a steel ferrule. Note that Japanese chisels are often supplied with the ferrule loose - This is traditional and one of the first tasks a new owner should undertake is to "swell" the end of the handle with water, then hammer the swollen timber over the ferrule thus locking it in place. This was considered part of the process of taking ownership of these tools and looking after them. We have the traditional tool designed for this below - the JC-SETTER.
Each of the chisels is hollow ground on the back to facilitate maintenance of a flat surface when sharpening, as is traditional on Japanese tools.
Set sizes include 6, 9, 12, 18, 24 and 30mm. Overall length of each is approximately 220mm.
