Forstner style bits are more suited to drilling cross grain; and give far less entry damage and exit damage at the edge of the hole. Forstner Bits are necessary to drill through-holes or flat-bottomed (blind) holes to a precise depth for woodworking projects or hardware installations. Unlike most drill bits which are guided by the tip, Forstner bits are guided by the wide outside rim of the bit.
