Dovetails have been a staple in woodwork for centuries, often seen as a sign of quality work. It can take years of practice and skill to do dovetails quickly and accurately by hand. The versatile Leigh D4R Pro Dovetail Jig allows all woodworkers to create a range of fine joints in your work, in a time efficient manner.
Many jigs on the market will do dovetails quickly and easily, but the Leigh jigs are in a league of their own when it comes to adjustability. The jig uses adjustable fingers rather than a fixed comb, which allows for customised settings for a truly hand-made look, appropriate to the job at hand.
The Leigh D4R has an impressive list of joints it can do. The standard bits that come with the jig allow for through dovetails, sliding dovetails, single pass half blind dovetails, variably spaced half blind dovetails, end on end joints and finger joints in material 12mm to 20mm. Variably spaced blind dovetails, like through dovetails allow the fingers to be positioned to suit the width of the timber, where half blind dovetails are limited by the width of the timber.
With optional accessories, even more intricate and advanced joints can be done. With the use of smaller or larger bits, materials from 3mm to 31mm can be routed. No other jig gives this amount of versatility!
An adaptor is required for the base of the router to hold the Leigh eBush. This jig is supplied with the unique Leigh eBush. If unsure on guide bush adaptor selection, please contact our customer service team or your nearest store.
What router is recommend?
Leigh recommend a 1/2" shank capable router, of at least 1000W for their dovetail jigs and the templates that go with them.
A router with a low centre of gravity is also good, as this makes preventing tilting the router during use a lot easier. A router that is a little taller still works well and the addition of a VRS (optional extra) gives that extra stability.
A plunge base router is needed for the Leigh FMT jigs due to the way the jig operates, but either a plunge or fixed base router can be used for the dovetail jigs.
If purchasing a new router, consider ergonomics, switch location, a good plunge mechanism and easy, accurate adjustment of bit height.
